What makes HeliosReflect different from existing solar concentrators?

Current systems convert light into heat or electricity. The HeliosReflect proposal is an integral architecture: one infrastructure producing electricity, light transport through optical fibres, industrial heat and photochemical processes. The core piece (HR-DOC) is under validation; the multifunctional infrastructure vision is the conceptual difference.

Is it not the same as a Dish-Stirling or a Cassegrain system?

They share classical optical principles (the focal property of the parabola). The difference lies in the compound mapping of two confocal paraboloids and in the goal of delivering a concentrated parallel beam to a single receiver, not a point image. It is a technical proposal that must be validated experimentally.

Why is it not built yet?

Accepted Answer

Because of rigour. Before building, the hypothesis must be mathematically proven sound and free of physical law violations. That theoretical validation is closed; the experimental one is designed and pending funding. Building before validating would be irresponsible.

What is demonstrated today and what is not?

Demonstrated: the focal property of the parabola, conservation of energy, conservation of étendue and the thermodynamic concentration limit, plus the analytical and numerical validation of HR-DOC (including a 200,000-ray Monte Carlo simulation). Not demonstrated: behaviour with real mirrors, manufacturing tolerances and performance at scale; those require experimentation.

Does it not violate the second law of thermodynamics?

No. Concentration without losses is bounded by étendue conservation: any real concentrator operates within that limit. Simulations verify the design respects the thermodynamic limit. The goal is not to violate physics, but to get closer to the theoretical limit than current designs.

How much CO₂ will a plant capture?

No published CO₂ capture figure would be supported by evidence today. That value depends on the specific photochemistry, still under research. We publish hypotheses, not results, until experimental validation exists.

What are the main risks of the project?

Three: that experimental validation refutes the central hypothesis (scientific risk), that real performance at scale falls below the theoretical one (technical risk), and that economic viability cannot compete with established solar technologies (market risk). All three are managed with a progressive validation roadmap.

What exactly does "not demonstrated" mean?

In this project, "not demonstrated" is used with precision: it means that no experimental evidence exists yet. It does not mean "false", nor "probably false". The distinction between demonstrated, partially demonstrated and hypothesis is the backbone of the Transparency Center.
