First, understand the challenge
For more than a century, fossil fuels have driven human development and raised the concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere. Replacing them with renewables is a priority, but it may not be enough to reverse the changes already produced.
Four simultaneous fronts
The energy system and the climate system are intertwined. No isolated technology can solve a systemic problem.
Climate change
The concentration of greenhouse gases keeps growing. We need to reduce emissions and, additionally, technologies able to remove carbon from the atmosphere.
Energy
Global energy demand will not stop growing. Replacing fossil fuels demands multiplying renewable capacity with efficiency and territorial acceptance.
Biodiversity and land
Every energy plant occupies territory. If energy replaces ecosystems, we do not solve the problem: we move it.
Accumulated CO₂
Reducing emissions does not remove the CO₂ already present. Removal technologies and radiative balance management are part of the answer.
Diagnosis
The limitations of current solar plants
Solar energy is the largest source available on the planet. The problem is not the source: it is the use we make of it.
Partial use of the energy
Only a fraction of the radiation becomes electricity; the rest is reflected or dissipated as heat.
Land occupation
Large areas of land become energy monocultures, modifying active ecosystems.
Lack of ecological integration
Energy and conservation are treated as independent goals when they should be designed together.
Little contribution to CO₂ removal
Conventional plants do not remove the CO₂ already present in the atmosphere.
The starting point
The challenge is not only energetic
It is climatic, ecological and about land-use justice. An integral solution should produce energy without replacing the Earth’s natural capacity to generate life, and also contribute to carbon capture.
